Reel-to-reel tape recording is a form of magnetic tape audio recording in which the recording medium is held on a reel that is not permanently mounted in a cassette. It was used in early tape drives for data storage in video tape recorders and on mainframe computers. As of 2020, there are still two companies that manufacture magnetic recording tape.
